Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
