Sir Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not seeking a return to football management, pointing out that it would be difficult to match the special mission he felt as the national team coach.

Southgate expressed his plan to channel his attention toward supporting young people and combating what he called a pervasive negative narrative presently existing in the country.

Pursuing Different Paths Outside of Coaching

Speaking on air, he was prompted regarding speculation linking him with available jobs in the top flight and other leagues.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he replied. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Commitment to Role Models

Leading up to the release of his new title, his new work on leadership, he emphasized that he is highly enthusiastic about providing role models for teenagers, utilizing lessons from his tenure as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

Southgate feels that his experience coaching England, during which the team transformed from being widely disliked to greatly admired, holds general lessons.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he said. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Parenting and Influencing Youth

Drawing on his family life, the coach remarked: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He went on: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Togetherness Beyond Conflict

Southgate asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the public discourse often centers on disagreement.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he commented. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

His upcoming publication, titled Dear England, is scheduled to provide additional perspectives on guidance and public spirit inspired by his notable time in football.
