That Gory Animated Film Ending That Stays With Viewers

Out of every adult-oriented animated films I have ever viewed, no other has remained with me as much as the fear-filled ending of the explicitly bloody and overwhelingly transgressive 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.

In the year 2015, the Spanish writer-director crafted a grim, bleak , often savage world with a few small , desolate glimmers of hope.

Although Unicorn Wars appears as it originated from a desire to push the medium further, the director explained that it was rather a try to communicate a universal, cross-cultural message about “the mutual source of all wars.”

This theme is conveyed by means of a squad of vividly colored bears , obviously based on a well-known line of lovable figures.

Growing up in a community centered on warmongering and the military-industrial complex, numerous the bears are fixated on slaughtering the mythical beasts, because of a holy book that claims the bears they previously were masters of the forest, before the unicorns expelled them.

Some have not completely fallen for the brainwashing, , prefer to experiment with narcotics or fornicate in the forest.

Unlike their friendly equivalents, these bright beings show genitals and obvious sex drives.

For a certain especially vicious, skeptical animal, Bluey, the war against the unicorns transforms into a path toward dominance — and specifically to supremacy over his more tender, more compassionate sibling the character Tubby.

Bluey behaves aggressively , a seeming antisocial figure , and as fear dominates his group and kills his fellow soldiers sequentially, he grabs more and more influence on his own behalf, in increasingly gory, destructive ways.

Meanwhile, the unicorns are suffering their own nightmare, through a spreading, deadly beast in their habitat.

“Initially, it feels like a lighthearted film,” the director commented. “But then it evolves into a more dramatic and melancholic movie. And by the end, it’s a terrifying movie.”

Unicorn Wars begins feeling a bit like one of the more quirky features by a renowned filmmaker, that uncover a mischievous joy in permitting animated figures curse, shoot each other, or engage sexually.

Then it evolves into something more like a bleaker movie by that same artist, including ever more graphic violence , a palpable relation to genuine suffering of battle.

In the finale, it becomes an outright theatrical horror massacre.

The fear that makes this a Halloween-friendly viewing starts a lot earlier than that description suggests.

The Unicorn Wars is one for the most dedicated gorehounds, for enthusiasts of intense movies who want to watch a film they’ve never viewed until now, and are able to withstand a story which delivers unflinching brutality.

View it in a dimly lit space free from interruptions, and the finale will crawl under your skin and stay with you.
