The 2026 Formula 1 cars are designed to be lighter, more agile and sustainable relative to present-day cars.

F1 has unveiled the simplified language that will be used to explain the intricate details of its new 2026 regulations.

The sport is implementing what is considered the largest rules overhaul in its illustrious history starting in 2026, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the mandatory use of 100% sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which retain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a substantially higher battery power, necessitating major innovations in the aero packages.

During grand prix events, drivers will strategically manage ERS energy – sometimes even qualifying laps – to secure the peak performance.

Wide-ranging research were carried out with a wide range of fans, including new, casual and core fans, to determine which phrases would make things clearer of the key features of the new regulations.

The stated goal was to render a range of advanced technical aspects of the sport as easy to grasp as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, initial designations for some systems – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the moveable wings – have been abandoned in preference for descriptive names that succinctly convey the real-world effect of the system.

What's the New Technology?

According to rule-makers that drivers will have greater control to make decisions regarding energy deployment, regeneration, and conservation.

The new regulations feature a set of functions that will be visually displayed on TV overlays to enhance the fans' insight of the on-track action.

  • Attack Mode: This replaces the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy accessible when a competitor is close behind the vehicle in front to facilitate an overtaking maneuver.
  • Power Mode: This is a driver-operated battery discharge from the hybrid system that can be used in offensive or defensive moves. It delivers the pilot maximum power at the activation of a control.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the car's wings adjust their angles – opening on the long straight sections for minimal air resistance and increased velocity, and sealing in the bends for optimal cornering performance.
  • Recharge: The system can recharge the energy store with power recovered from braking, or during partial power application at the conclusion of a straight or in certain corners where only limited engine output is applied.

2026 Car Specifications

The vehicles for the new era will be more compact and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a wheelbase shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight decreased by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is projected to decrease by approximately 15-30%, although squads will undoubtedly recover some as they optimize their packages.

Drag has been slashed by 40%. The cars will utilize active aerodynamics – both wings will move on the straight sections to improve speed and boost top speed and click back into place for optimal grip in corners.

Tyres will continue to use 18-inch rims, but the actual tyres will be reduced in width, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and three centimetres on the rear.

2026 Engine Regulations

The 2026 engines will have an near-equal balance in power produced by the internal combustion engine and the ERS, a rise from about one-fifth electric power in the current formula.

The hybrid system is streamlined through the deletion of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the intricate and expensive unit that harvested power from the exhaust turbo.

Every car on the grid will be required to run on fully sustainable fuel, manufactured from organic sources or synthetic industrial processes.
