The McLaren driver narrowly beat team-mate and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the quickest lap in the final moments of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who grabbed the championship lead from his teammate by a single point after taking the win in Mexico City two weeks ago, beat the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Before then, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver during the running before sprint qualifying set to begin at 6:30 PM GMT. The Red Bull star, the only other driver in realistic title contention, trailing with a 36-point deficit Norris, ended up in 17th place as his team followed a unique setup. His teammate the Japanese driver was the only driver to have an incident, if briefly, when he lost control at corner four during the early running. The Japanese slid over the curbs on exit before sliding over the run-off area, and was blessed to avoid just a light touch of the barrier. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also had a spin, at the very end of the session, rotating twice through the quick descending Mergulho corner leading to the last turn on to the main straight. The veteran wrapped up in P19, one place behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren pair were far ahead of the other competitors, with the German's car P3, 0.619 seconds off Piastri's best. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Carlos Sainz.
