Igor Jesus found the net on two occasions as the Premier League side rounded off the league phase of the Europa League with a convincing win against Ferencvaros at the home stadium.

Forest had already secured a berth in the knockout round play-offs and went into this game with a slim possibility of reaching the top eight, although they required other matches to go their way.

That did not happen but this confident display will give Forest fans confidence that their team can navigate the two-legged play-off to reach the last 16.

Kristoffer Zachariassen struck the post with a header inside the opening stages for the away team – coached by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was dominantly the home side from that point forward.

Forest opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Ryan Yates' cross was turned into his own net by the defender and added a second shortly after – the striker squeezing a shot in at the back post for his 10th goal of the campaign.

Jesus' eleventh goal came early in the second half when he made a perfectly-timed run to break clear of the defence and then drive an effort beyond the goalkeeper.

That goal killed off the visitors' aspirations of mounting a recovery and instead the hosts added a fourth when the excellent James McAtee scored from a penalty after a foul by the hapless Bence Otvos inside the penalty area on the winger.

The Europa League knockout phase play-off draw takes place on the final Friday of January (12:00 GMT), where Nottingham Forest might face either the Turkish side or Panathinaikos.

"It is not just the result, there was that feel about it. I want these players to do well as a unit, the entire team," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"This is another step, but it is a positive one."

Team Breakdown: Jesus Catches Eye as Recent Arrival Observes from Stands

Igor Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in European competition this season with half of his 11 goals coming in the tournament.

This double also means he has scored three goals in his last two games and the threat of a challenge for his place in the forward line could be spurring him on.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was last week brought in temporarily and he was observing this game from the directors' box.

That may well have been on Jesus' thoughts as he was outstanding against Ferencvaros, delivering two superb goals and overall being a menace to the visitors' defence with his pace and movement.

The forward was not the only one in catching the eye, with McAtee producing his best performance in a Nottingham Forest shirt since joining from the champions last summer, while the Swiss international also impressed.

Such positive showings will give Forest some fresh hope as they switch focus to increasing the gap from the Premier League relegation zone when they host their London rivals on Sunday.

"The minimum requirement is a reaction," added Dyche.

"I've never questioned their work ethic or their dedication or honesty. It is just about displaying your ability.

"McAtee was very good and Dan Ndoye was incredibly lively. Igor got another couple and these are good signs."
