Both Deceased Students Identified in Brown University Attack as Authorities Press On With Manhunt for Gunman.

Two students who lost their lives in the recent tragic incident on the university campus were being remembered Monday – while an intensive search for their killer continued following the freeing by local law enforcement of the sole person detained in connection in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, as stated by the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.

She served as vice-president of Brown’s branch of the campus GOP group, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also shared condolences online, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, particularly her mother and father.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.

Umurzokov’s identity was confirmed by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He harbored grand aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon and assisting patients,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a memorial statement.

What Happened

An additional nine individuals were hurt in the weekend shooting in the school of engineering of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 detained in a raid at a hotel about approximately 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was being released.

“A perpetrator remains free,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and pursue a different angle, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”

Ongoing Concerns

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our public”.

The assailant began shooting inside a room in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a law enforcement official told the news agency.

Law enforcement that searched the inn found two handguns and magazines when the person of interest was arrested, according to reports.

Condition of the Injured

Of the nine hurt, one pupil was allowed to go home, said the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in grave but unchanging health, and another was critically ill, authorities stated on Sunday.

An educational institution, a private academy in the city of Durham, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

Further Tributes

Cook was honored at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only in her youth... but at the university she was a shining example in that specific location as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the club. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and peers,” he said.

Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the passing of Umurzokov in a message. “We extend our sincere condolences to his relatives, loved ones, and peers and lament the passing of his bright future.”

Wider Picture

The weekend's murders at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest college with about thousands of bachelor's and postgraduate students, took place amid one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings documented across the United States so far in the current year, according to statistics. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
