American Military Conducts Deadly Strike in Pacific, Resulting in Four Fatalities

As stated by a senior defense spokesperson, the American military carried out a fatal kinetic engagement on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, killing four people.

“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in international waters. Intelligence verified the vessel was traveling along a established drug smuggling route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no US military forces were injured.”

Context and Recent Actions

This announcement comes a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, pledging to increase the military buildup.

Just on the previous day, US defense officials said it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Justifies Tactics Amidst Scrutiny

The administration has faced increasing pressure to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a successful operation, saying it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of legal military action.

Although the administration has said the campaign is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official appeared to suggest a broader political aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor remarked the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”

This indicates the series of strikes may be linked to a strategy to remove Venezuela's current government.
