A Special Release Pikachu Promo Aims to Be Super Effective On Speculators

Marking the arrival of a captivating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique collaboration is underway. The Pokémon Company and London's Natural History Museum are opening a temporary store featuring special items. Enthusiasts will find offerings including plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies all drawing from the institution's theme. For collectors, though, will be a specially made Pikachu card, given as a free bonus for the pop-up. The store is scheduled both the physical location to its web counterpart from January 26 to April 19.

The Book Behind the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a much-awaited volume packed with stunning artwork depicting creatures in their natural habitats. It's essentially like what an in-world scientist could produce once trainers provide field notes, or what Charles Darwin could have sketched if the famous islands were populated by flying-types instead of birds. Part of the charm lies in the book's scholarly approach, treating Pokémon as a legitimate scientific study. Author Yoshinari Yonehara and illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita both hold PhDs in animal behavior and ecology.

Why This Promo Card Different

It is common for The Pokémon Company to release promos celebrating major tournaments and crossover partnerships. A lot of these promotional cards typically highlight the famous mouse Pokémon that acts as the series face. What distinguishes this new promotion apart however, is the distinctly bigger size. Although exact measurements have not been immediately shared, availability is guaranteed to be highly restricted, with fans able to get only a single card with each transaction.

Limiting Reseller Interest

According to a company statement, some of the pop-up items will also be sold beyond the institution itself. However, a wider release will only be select retailers within the United Kingdom. Importantly, collectors cannot acquire this promo via the online Pokémon Center. While speculator demand is a given, the setup suggests they will have trouble stockpiling large numbers on this occasion. If you're feeling left out, there is an alternative like fossil-themed display headed to the Windy City later this year.

"Every penny from purchases made in the Museum shop and from its web shop, including these items, support the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. That encompasses the efforts of hundreds of researchers dedicated to scientific inquiry and finding answers to the planetary emergency," it says.
